The underwater environment is hazardous for humans due to the fact that they are dependent on technical equipment for life support, divers have limited navigation capabilities and communication with the surface, and the underwater environment is under the constant influence of external environmental disturbances.

The ADRIATIC project builds upon recent research accomplishments in the area of human-robot interaction underwater, by advancing the developed cooperative motion algorithms and introducing wearable sensors in a form of a diver glove for controlling an autonomous underwater vehicle that serves as a robotic diving buddy.

The main objectives are to develop collaborative motion strategies between a human diver and an autonomous underwater vehicle through exteroceptive recognition of diver position and orientation; determining diver physiological parameters using novel wearable sensors; explore novel diver-robot communication methods based on wearable sensors, and evaluate the feasibility of the proposed human-robot interaction solutions in a real environment.
