Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LABUST), CoE MARBLE, and IEEE OES University of Zagreb Student Branch Chapter invite you to a talk "Understanding Security at Sea" held by Prof. Christian Bueger, Professor of International Relations at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Political Science, as part of the MARBLE project.
The lecture will take place on Friday, November 7th, 2025 at 09 a.m. at LABUST lab (Miramarska cesta 20). The lecture will be held in person in English language and is estimated to last 60 minutes, including questions.

Abstract:
The maritime domain is increasingly central to global security, encompassing challenges from piracy and smuggling to cyber threats, climate change, and great-power rivalry. This talk traces the evolution of maritime security as a field—examining its historical roots, institutional frameworks, and emerging priorities such as critical infrastructure protection, technological innovation, and environmental resilience. It offers an integrated view of how security at sea is being redefined in the 21st century and what this means for research, policy, and practice.
Bio:
Prof. Christian Bueger is Professor of International Relations at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Political Science, where he leads the Ocean Infrastructures Research Group and co-chairs the Copenhagen Ocean Hub. He is also Honorary Professor at the University of the Seychelles and Research Fellow at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). His work focuses on international security, global governance and maritime/blue-ocean politics, and he has authored or edited several books and over 200 articles. His most recent book is Understanding Maritime Security (Oxford University Press, 2024). He holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute (2010).
