Invitation to the lecture...

As part of the UWIN-LABUST project, the Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies in collaboration with the IEEE Croatia Section - Robotics and Automation Chapter and IEEE OES University of Zagreb Student Branch Chapter is happy to invite you to the lecture

"Science-based Innovation in Marine Robotics"

held by Prof. Nuno Alexandre Cruz, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal. The lecture will take place on Wednesday February 15th, 2023. at 11:00 AM in the Grey Hall at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). The lecture is in English and is open for all interested participants.

The lecturer’s CV and the summary of the lecture can be found below.

Abstract:

The ocean-related communities in general want more data about the ocean environment, to measure more parameters, to increase sampling frequencies, and to ensure data quality. They also want to automate processes, from data gathering to processing and communicating, so that these data can be available sooner, and with less risk for operators. Industry also looks for robotic tools to automate processes, replacing operators for better efficiency and safety, reducing logistics and maintenance costs. Some of these challenges are already being addressed by off-the-shelf mature solutions, while other new scenarios continuously require specific improvements. These new capabilities require not only strong engineering skills, but they also need to be grounded in solid scientific foundations to maximize efficiency and reliability. The talk will describe some of these robotics subsystems, together with examples of past and current projects where they are being implemented.

Brief bio:

Nuno Cruz holds a MSc. in Digital Systems Engineering from UMIST, UK, and a PhD. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Porto, in Portugal. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and coordinates the Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems at INESC TEC. The Center has over 80 researchers, moslty dedicated to marine robotic systems. Nuno Cruz is a Senior Member of the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society, an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, and a member of the editorial board of MDPI Sensors. He has over 100 publications in journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has been involved in the development and deployment of marine robotic vehicles for more than 25 year, under the scope of multiple national and international projects, as well as industry contracts. He has led the design of multiple autonomous vehicles at the University of Porto and INESC TEC, namely the Zarco and Gama ASVs and the MARES, TriMARES and DART AUVs. His current research interests include the development of strategies for the efficient use of autonomous vehicles at sea, including the concept of adaptive sampling.
